Bringing experienced leadership and a solid perspective to Trussville's City Council
Mildred Reed is a recognized leader in higher education, municipal government, and community service. She has been on the faculty of Jefferson State Community College for 21 years teaching in both the Business and Liberal Arts Departments in the areas of Business Management and Music. Mildred is a recipient of the Alabama Community College System Award of Excellence and Phi Theta Kappa Faculty Scholar Award.
Before joining the faculty at Jefferson State, Mildred was on the faculty at Miles College and served as Program Coordinator for Music and Choral Director. Mildred earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Samford University, a Master of Music from the University of Oklahoma, and a Master of Public and Private Management from Birmingham-Southern College.
With the belief in civic engagement, Mildred was elected to the Pelham City Council in 2016 and served in the leadership role of President Pro Tempore during the four years term. She also served as the City Council liaison to the Pelham Board of Education and Planning and Zoning Commission, which she chaired four years before being elected to office. In 2020, Mildred was re-elected for a second term. She holds the designations of Certified Municipal Official and Alabama Planning and Zoning Official and served as a Committee Member for the Alabama League of Municipalities Community and Economic Development and Human Development Committee.
Mildred's broad community leadership includes serving as an officer on the Foundation Board of Director of the National Community Associations Institute. Because of her extensive public service, Mildred was among a select group of honorees at the national conference who were awarded the National Community Association Institute Board of Trustees Award of Excellence in Government and Public Affairs. She also served as president on the Board of Community Associations Institute of Alabama.
Mildred Lanier Reed served as a dedicated member of the Pelham City Council. She won her first election in 2016 and was re-elected in 2020, securing 63% of the vote. Her tenure was marked by active civic engagement and a commitment to community service.
In recognition of her contributions, she was honored during Pelham's Women's History Month celebration in March 2024, alongside other trailblazing female leaders.
